Im thinkin about goin to university to study optometry, the course would be an undergraduate course BSc. I have a very bad credit rating and im not sure if this will effect my ability to get a student loan as i thought they were given out from the goverment not financial institutions? Could anyone clear this up for me?

Your credit should not affect recieveing a student loan from the SLC (or SAAS if you’re in Scotland) – I also have a very poor credit history (I’m terrible with money) but I recieved the full student loan in September when I went into the 1st year of my BSc degree. They use different criteria to credit agencies and if you meet the criteria you should be eligible for a student loan, regardless of your credit history. The best thing to do would be to call them and speak to an advisor for advice – but make sure you get a name!!! Because if and when you have to call back and you speak to someone different, and there are no notes written up on your file from the previous call months ago – it’s enough to make anyone go mad! At least if you can say, I spoke to …. and she advised me that … then it makes you seem more credible. Good luck!

Natrub is right, your credit history has got no importance when it comes to student loans.
I have got a terrible credit history, CCJs etc, but am still entitled to loans/grants etc when at uni.
    Hope this helps!
